The Ethiopian Telecommunications
Corporation (ETC) has officially launched satellite telephony in
Ethiopia that would allow users to be connected from anywhere
around the world through purpose-built in phone terminals. |

Addis Ababa - The South African communications firm, Comparex
Africa, is to install multimedia broadband technology in
Ethiopia at a cost of $10.6m, local media reported Friday.
The new technology, the first of its kind in Africa, is to be
installed at 10 sites in Addis Ababa and 11 others in regional
cities, according to an agreement signed Thursday between the
Ethiopian Telecommunications Corporation (ETC) and the South
African company.
"Some other African countries might have used part of this
technology, but Ethiopia is the first to apply this technology in
an integrated way," ETC Deputy General Manager Asfaw
Hailemariam said.

gets substantial GSM coverage expansion |

China's Zhongxing
Telecom Corporation (ZTE) has been awarded a 29-million-US-dollar
contract by authorities in the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa to
expand the country's mobile telephone network.
ZTE's bid beat five other companies: Motorola, Nokia, Ericsson,
Alcatel, and another Chinese firm, Huawei Technologies.
Under the contract awarded to ZTE, the firm will have to increase
Ethiopia's GSM mobile telephone network from 50,000 to 200,000
lines within 12 months.
ZTE is also contractually obliged to install new mobile telephone
networks in 12 major Ethiopian cities
